I the beginning of the class there was worry, not of finishing but of giving this course the attention that it needed, and I thought that I was not. I kept thinking that I could be giving more only if I did not have four other classes. But I did and I finally realized that I needed to take a step back and just do what I can and that will just have to be good enough. By doing this it allowed for me not to be so stresses and enjoy my research topic. Once I enjoyed it I was able to give it the attention that it required. I am a currently an anthropology major, and research writing will be very helpful to me in the future, and this classed has helped me to form my ideas. My proudest moment happened around week 6 or 7 when I was one of the few that did not have to rewrite their research proposal. The one thing that I will take away from the class and stay with me is the ability to find support evidence to back up my theories.

1) The most helpful was writing the lit review because, that was when I finally read all of the articles and figured out how they would fit together to support my thesis. This step allowed for me to actually form my thoughts and ideas, but to also edit out the ideas that would not work with the paper.

2) Talking to my teacher about the paper rafter finishing my lit review and figuring out how I would like the rest of the paper to flow. That was the best feedback that I got. I feel that the set up of my paper works and made it more personal.

3) The most difficult set was interviewing my family members. They were not always willing to talk to me about the house because they believed that they had already given enough information. The easiest was writing my proposal, once I chose a topic. I feel that setting up my ideas came naturally and were the best part to put into words.

4) The introduction of my paper, I feel that I spent the most time on that section trying to make sure that everything and idea works together to keep the reader want to keep going.

Results

When writing the results section, organization is important on how the researcher wants their results presented. There are two ways to construct a comprehensible result section; the first way is to present all the results. The second is to present certain parts of the results and then present the rest at a later time (“Writing,” 2003). The purpose of the results is to “present the results, and make them meaningful to the reader” (“Writing,” 2003). This data to presented to justify statements and trends (“Writing-up,” 2002).

Discussion

The discussion section is where the original research question should be answered (“Writing-up,” 2002). By starting with this it allows for everything to fall in place, and sets up the flow and organization of the section. This section should be concise and consist of nothing but the supportive evidence review (“The Structure,” 2002). The information that was presented in the results is reviewed and interpreted so it complies with the research being presented, and its relevance to the piece (“The Structure,” 2002).

Conclusion

Some strategies provided from the web site Conclusions, are designed to develop a draft, keep the research on task and return to the ideas from the into, but don’t just restate what was in the into add to why these questions were presented and how they fit together (2007). According to Schulman the conclusion should be written in past tense (1996).

When I went to combine the three sections, it all seemed to just come together. In a few places I did need to add a sentence or two to keep a flow between the paragraphs. But all in all, it did not take too much effort. Also it was exciting to see them all together. Which may sound weird, but there was a sigh of relief, something that I have been working on and putting so much time into to just match up. I realize that each section does need more work, adding more everywhere. For example in the lit review I need to state more sources and expand on the ones I have. The info that is already there is great, but it needs more. The section that needs the most work is the methodology, because it’s very dry. By adding more about my participants and details about where the house is the section will start to come together. I think that once I go and get the interviews and start the analysis and discussion sections it will help me to go back to the sections that are complete and really get this paper going in the direction that it needs to be.

Will since that I am stating that my own personal experiences, about the house that my family grew up in, I do not see another way but to name my participants.

Writing the Methodology Section of the paper can be summed up in two questions, “how was the data collected or generated” and “how was it analyzed,” (“Writing up Research”). The method that a researcher chooses affects what the results are; this is why it is so important for the reader to obtain the results. The Methods used should be appropriate for the data that the researcher is collecting. This should also state why this method was chosen and how it is the best for the research (“Writing up Research”).

The methodology, as “Writing a Research Report APA Style,” is broken up into three sections, research participants, materials used, and procedures. In the first part, participants, it describes the sample used and if there is any major demographic characteristics in the sample. There should be information on the materials collected, and give detail to the sample used in the study. The procedures describes the participant and how when where the data was collected.

The second article was easier for me to understand with who it was organized. However, in the first article it did a good job of explaining how the information should be used. And both will be great assets in helping my write my methodology.

Section 2.04 Once built these modern buildings are energy wasters as well, usually inefficiently lighted, cooled, heated and ventilated. Buildings consume about one-third of the energy and two-thirds of the electricity in the US and wastes most of it.

Section 2.05 Since the 1970s oil crisis buildings were built to be air tight causing health factors dealing with the ventilation and trapping in the VOCs.

Section 2.06 Building codes could be brought up to new standards to include environmental issues.

Section 2.07 Sustainable Design with eco-friendly and health benefits.

Section 2.08 The building industry is slow to update its codes.

Section 2.09 It takes about 17 years for new materials to become common in the building world.

Section 2.10 The construction boom in the late 1970’s into the 1980’s called for quick and cheap builds to be put up.

Section 2.11 Architects did not want to use the new eco-friendly materials because it required more time and money.

Section 2.12 The author uses an example of compact florescent lights, which cost more money but they last 10 times longer and are more energy efficient (save in the long run).

Section 2.13 The reason why new products take so long to catch on is because most architects want to see how a product lasts over 20-30 year period.

Section 2.14 In recent years more people are learning about newer environmentally friendly building ideas.

Section 2.15 Generations ago builders would use the environment they were building in as to the home was built.

Section 2.16 Today builders take out all of the trees and things to make the building more efficient. Houses in New Mexico should not be similar to those in New Hampshire

Section 2.17 Homeowners should observe the site before they design the house.

Section 2.18 Besides using the environment, other techniques should be used for a more cost efficient home, such as passive-solar, and traditional techniques integrated with new technologies.

Section 2.19 Conventional households produce 10,000 watts of energy daily; alternative homes produce 5,000 watts a day.

Section 2.20 The building industry has the ability to more energy-efficient, but all must be planned out far in advance, which is difficult.

Section 2.21 The best building projects are the ones that have communication.

Section 2.22 Now, local governments are integrating systems that are reducing construction wastes.

Section 2.23 Organizations will educate the local building industries on opportunities to recycle.

Section 2.24 There are a lot of factors that an architect must take into consideration when picking materials, but heath and environmental impacts of the materials never seem to make the list.

Section 2.25 AIA in 1992 published a guide to address this problem.

Section 2.26 In 1996 EPA joined AIA and created a new guide addressing indoor air quality.

Section 2.27 This guide provides a history of the materials for the designer and the occupant.

Section 2.28 The author inserts a quote from Joel Todd who is the vice president of Scientific Consulting Group, which performs the assessments for the guide.

Section 2.29 It allows for individuals to identify materials they want to avoid.

Section 2.30 However, when choosing materials a client will eventually have to choose health over green or vice versa depending on the priorities of the client.

Section 2.31 Durability is important in sustainable design, and must always be kept into consideration.

Section 2.32 Alternative materials are more expensive.

Section 2.33 Wood siding is a common feature of green houses, however wood is becoming more expensive and the quality is declining.

Section 2.34 Developed in the 1980’s cement board is becoming an adequate replacement for wood siding.

Section 2.35 Another alternative is Hardiplank.

Section 2.36 The author goes on to discuss the pros and cons of Hardiplank.

Section 2.37 Composite limber is being used for decks.

Section 2.38 New products must go through two stages, first it must be tested, and the second stage the product must be used in a demonstration period.

Section 2.39 Non profit and private organizations have had pilots sustainable design projects.

Section 2.40 The author explains where ecotourists go and why.

Section 2.41 The biggest flaw in eco-friendly designs is that it did not find its way to low-income people.

Section 2.42 The author concludes with the benefits of and eco-friendly space does.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Article 1. A Brief History of the Green Movement: What is the Green Movement?

a) The purpose of this article to let the reader understand when and how environmental awareness evolved. Also to change any false assumptions. (section 1.02)

b) Getting history right is always important. By showing her audience how environmentalism started and the obstacles it had to go through to get the green revolution of today. (sections, 1.03, 1.04, 1.15)

c) What are the origins and evolution of “green?” (section 1.02)

d) There was no primary research, it was all researched information.

e) We are in a “new” green movement. (sections 1.12, 1.13)

f) Everyone has a part in the state of the environment, make yours a green one. (section 1.15)

Article 2. Green Houses

a) The purpose of this article is to show alternative building materials that are currently being used and why it took so long for them to get here. (sections 2.07, 2.09, 2.10, 2.13, 2.20, 2.31, 2.32)

b) By using the alternative products it is beneficial for the health of the occupant and better for the environment. (sections 2.02, 2.04, 2.05, 2.07, 2.24, 2.26, 2.30)

c) Why are building industries not enforcing the use of alternative building supplies? How can these supplies are used to maximize the use of the environment around the building? (sections 2.19-2.24, 2.33)

d) There were interviews with different people in the building industry that chose what the minimum requirements for a building are. (sections 2.27, 2.28)

e) Although alternative materials are getting more amp, the main flaw is that it is not targeting every one. (section 2.41)

f) Environmentally friendly structures can improve air quality, save energy. However green materials will not become mainstream until they are more cost efficient, and can out-perform conventional ones. (section 2.42)

According to Fleming, the introduction is the key to keeping the reader interested to the end. It sets the stage of what’s to come. Apart from the thesis the first sentence is the most important piece of the intro. However, the first sentence should be a real attention grabber. This is the hook of the paper; it gives the reader a glimpse into the writer’s perspective on where the paper is going. This first sentence is where the writer can get funky. There are many different ways to go about this personal touch a few are; surprising fact, humor, quote, or anecdote. It is recommended that when the paper is finished to go back and make sure the thesis matches the paper, and the first sentence has some “zing” (Fleming).

The article that I chose was similar to Fleming’s, but this article explained what some of the benefits are for using the different strategies for that first sentence. It listed five approaches for that the most important of sentences (“Research Paper,” 2009). Quotes of well know people are good, but it needs to be relevant to the topic. Another, is to start with a question, it allows the reader to reflect on the dilemma. A narrative gives a story that is discussed later in the paper. Contradictions, gives the introduction an interesting view for the reader, and gives the reader something to think about. Then there is a fact, it should be fascinating not just information.

Both are helpful, and when I go to write the intro these sources will be good references. I feel that the two main parts of the introduction are a great thesis and an awesome hook, first sentences that get the reader in and the rest will keep them there to the end. But that at most is only four sentences so what goes into the rest on the introduction? Right now my guess is supportive evidence and general points that will be further examined in the body.
